In Greek Mythology Mermaids were beautifull women and their role was to make men hit on the sea rocks.

Sirens were alsmost the same with the difference that they were singing in order to take control of the emotions of the human mind(mostly men)and the outcome was the ship to crash on the rocks arround the area(in short,a trap).About mermaids,beautifull but deadly.The reason is that their beauty was also a trap to lure men to them.The outcome was again a crashed ship sometimes by rocks and sometimes by mermaids themselves.Thats what i think is their main difference,hope i helped
